Familiars in Magic

A familiar is an animal with whom a witch has a magical connection. In European traditions, prior to the middle ages, it was believed that certain small animals were inhabited by fairies or spirits and would help a witch practice magic. Today many witches have an animal companion with whom they have a close bond. There is a certain amount of contention as to whether or not a familiar is a Wiccan concept. However, familiars may certainly be used to help with magic. It is believed that a familiar must find us, not the other way around. A familiar can be sought by meditation or divination, but cannot be summoned.
